Cars in the Austrian-Hungarian period

In the beginnings of motoring in the Czech lands, a photographer was presented at all major car trips. The very first car on Czech roads, the Benz-Viktoria purchased in 1893 by Theodor Liebig, was depicted by a photographer during its trip to France. The first car manufactured in the Czech lands, Präsident, represented the country's industrial progress at the 1898 jubillee exhibition in Vienna, where of course it was documented by a photographer. In the same year, one of the first lorries ever was manufactured in Kopřivnice, followed by a series of passenger cars of different names (Meteor, Versucher, Wien...), with photographs taken of most of these vehicles. The Versucher was photographed in 1899 by Jindřich Eckert in front of a painted pseudo-Renaissance background in his studio.

The first series of private and promotional images was probably produced by Rudolf Bruner-Dvořák in Prague in connection with the journey of the Benz car of factory owner Klubal in 1898. According to statistics, there were 190 cars in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire in 1900.

Following a previous experience with bicycle and motorcycle production, car production in Mladá Boleslav (now Škoda Auto, a unit of the Volkswagen group) began in 1905 when the voituretta was designed there. In 1906 car production was launched at Pražská automobilová továrna, three years later known as Praga, and in 1907 it also started in the Liberec-based factory RAF where the company Linser had manufactired cars before. There were also some small car factories on the market. At that time, promotional images by professional photographers of cars in factories started to appear, and cars were photographed on roads (in idle state however) by their owners - amateur photographers. And it is especially the latter situation that these images depict. Before the start of World War I, a total of 7 520 cars were reportedly manufactured in the Czech lands.

The original images are part of Collection Scheufler. None of the photographs may be reproduced or used in any form or by any means, including downloading, without the prior permission of the owner.

I would like to thank Dalibor Feuereisl for helping to identify the makes and owners of some vehicles and Dr. Miloš Hořejš for cooperation.
