Paris 1900
Paris and the Universal Exhibition of 1900
The 1900 Universal Exhibition took place in Paris between 15 April and 12 November, becoming a success in terms of visitor numbers as well as financially. Part of the exposition was the Second Olympic Games, at which participants from the Czech lands won several medals (František Janda-Suk - a silver medal, Hedviga Rosenbaum - two golden medals in tennis). A number of structures and buildings were built for the exposition, some of which have been preserved until the present time, including the first line of the Paris metro. The exhibition was where talking films and the escalator were first presented, for example.
Photography played an important role at the Univesal Exhibition as well. Among those participating in the event was the Prague Club of Amateur Photographers that won a silver medal for their collection. Among the professional photographers presented at the exhibition was Jan Langhans who won an unspecified award there.
The exposition was an opportunity for several Czech photographers to travel to Paris. Besides A. Mucha, who lived in Paris and whose name was connected with the Bosnian pavilion, among those who photographed Paris of 1900 were Rudolf Bruner-Dvořák and František Krátký. It is images by these two photographers that we present here as part of the Collection Scheufler.
The original images are part of Collection Scheufler. None of the photographs may be reproduced or used in any form or by any means, including downloading, without the prior permission of the owner and without citing the source.
